Meet Jay Neill – author of high-concept British urban fantasy
I write British Urban Fantasy that delights in the collision of the mundane and the magical. After 25 years working as a technology land product leader, I decided to switch to writing fiction to pursue my real passion: building worlds that are hidden just beneath our reality.
My Published Work
My first novel, The Terminus Of All Things, is a standalone urban portal fantasy. It explores the concept of Endland, a chaotic, mirror-dystopia built entirely from the obsolete remnants and discarded ideas of our own world. I love taking the familiar and twisting it until it becomes something utterly alien.
My new series is The LineFolk of London, which is a separate urban mythology project. It uses the intricate infrastructure of the London Underground as the central nervous system for a secret magical society. The core concept is that all UK mythological creatures are forced to live within the restricted boundaries of the Circle Line, surviving only by harnessing a unique magical energy source I call Linether.
You can start your LineFolk journey with Curious Physiologies.
My witty, structured approach to modern fantasy has seen my work compared to authors like Ben Aaronovitch (Rivers of London) for my use of real-world infrastructure and Robert Rankin for my eccentric, inventive British comedy and urban mythologizing.
I live in the south of England with my family and many, many pets. You can usually find me on TikTok or BlueSky sharing worldbuilding insights and updates.
